My Kindergarten Classroom

Background Information

My School

For the past four years I have been teaching at James W. Rice Primary School in Phoenix, Arizona. James W. Rice is a Title One school located in a low socio-economic area. My school begins the day with free breakfast and the majority of students receive free lunches as well. As a kindergarten teacher, I am responsible for teaching all core subject areas as well as special areas since their is no funding for my students to attend art, gym or music classes. Despite these obstacles, our schools' mission is to be a safe and welcoming learning community, where we support and inspire everyone to achieve or develop his or her full potential.

My Students

As a teacher in a public school, the students that make up my classroom  continuously change throughout the school year. In general my classes have included between 20 and 25 students. My first two years of teaching the majority of my students were in English Language Learners (ELLs). The past two years I have had a mix of ELL and mainstream students. Regardless of my students' backgrounds, how many students I have, or how long a student will be in my class, I strive to create and maintain a safe and positive learning environment for each individual student.
